RALSTON - It's evident Ralston Grange has a list of admirers.
About 100 adults and kids showed up Dec. 15 for an elaborate potluck supper and an hour and a half of Christmas entertainment, and it was all free.
Dale Anderson, who frequently appears in the sports pages of the Ritzville Journal, was master of ceremonies for the program, as Grange President Jerry Snyder was already booked to play Santa Claus and other duties.
The meeting began with a short pitch to become a Grange member and application cards had been distributed to make the process easier.
Snyder played a medley of Joy to the World and Oh Come All Ye Faithful on the hall piano, which was followed up by a chorus of about 22 kids who sang Jingle Bells and We Wish You a Merry Christmas from the hall stage.
Drawings for prizes punctuated the evening.
The kids had prepared humorous skits, one involving direction and misdirection in handling several Christmas gifts in the audience, and another original work about the Wise Men called Three Wise Guys.
Young people played Silent Night and Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, on the piano, Jingle Bells on the recorder, and a lively tune combining fiddle and spoons.
The audience also heard Mary, Did You Know?
The assembly sang Here Comes Santa Claus as Snyder made his entrance in costume, minus a beard, which he excused by claiming the elves had placed gum in the hairy appendage while he slept.
Snyder made it optional whether the kids wanted to sit on a knee while he briefly interviewed them about what their Christmas wishes were.
The wishes ranged from a show heifer to shotgun ammunition, (one request for either tools or shotgun shells,) Legos, a baby doll, books, a horse, (Snyder recommended a miniature Shetland pony,) a Nerf gun, an expensive sports car, Christmas snow, two requests for a 20-guage shotgun, a BB gun, a doll set, and other great things.
At the end of the show the kids were packed off with a supply of popcorn balls.
