Homecoming game set for Friday
RITZVILLE — The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos got off to a good start Friday night, but just couldn’t close out the game as Warden came from behind for the win.
The Wardan Cougars topped the Broncos, 29-20.
Senior Brody Boness put all three of the Broncos’ touchdowns on the board. Boness opened scoring in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown dive. With the point-after kick good, the Broncos held a 7-0 lead at the end of the first stanza.
Boness added another TD early in the second quarter, when he took the handoff and raced 57 yards for the score. With the PAT good, the Broncos were up 14-0 early in the quarter.
But the Cougars would strike before halftime on a 2-yard touchdown pass. Warden added a kick to close the margin to 14-7 at the break.
Warden rallied in the third quarter, putting up two unanswered touchdowns, one on a 2-yard run and one on a 12-yard pass. Both PATs were good and the Cougars took a 21-14 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Boness found his footing again, and charged ahead for a 3-yard touchdown to close the gap. The kick after failed and the Broncos led 21-20.
Warden closed out the game with one last score, a 10-yard pass, and a 2-point conversion for the final 29-20 win.
The Broncos racked up 292 yards of total offense, compared to Warden’s 256.
Most of the Broncos yards were on the ground, 225 yards. Meanwhile, most of Wardens yards, 273, were in the air.
Cameron Boness completed 3-of-11 passes for 67 yards for the Broncos. He also had one intersection.
On the ground, Brody Boness had 31 carries for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns. Carson Kubik carried 4 times for 16 yards, Beau Fodeo had 3 carries for 14 yards and Cole Rouleau 1 carry for 2 yards.
Cameron Boness had minus-2 yards on 2 carries and Zach Klein had minus-6 on two carries.
Klein, however, led in receptions for the Broncos, with one catch for 39 yards. Bronco teammates Kubik had one catch for 23 yards and Fodeo 1 for 5 yards.
Individual statistics were not reported for Warden.
The Broncos (3-3) are at home again this week for Homecoming, when they will host the Northwest Christian (Colbert) Crusaders (4-1) at Jimmy Snider Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
The Crusaders are currently ranked No. 7 in the state and No. 2 in the Northeast 2B league, behind the Freeman Scotties (5-1), which is currently ranked No. 4 in the state.
The Broncos won’t face the Scotties until Nov. 1.
