RITZVILLE — Two 2023-24 state runner-up volleyball teams squared off Oct. 3, but only one team remained undefeated. The Freeman Scotties girls volleyball team topped the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos, 3-0.
It was the first loss of the year for the local girls. Individual statistics were not reported for the game.
The Scotties are ranked No. 3 in the state and the Broncos (8-1) are ranked No. 6 in Class 2B.
The undefeated Scotties (8-0), previously a Class 1A school, were dropped to Class 2B sports this season by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association based on an assigned socio-economic score rather than student enrollment.
Last year, the Scotties finished second in state 1A volleyball and the Broncos were second in state in Class 2B.
Prior to the loss, the Bronco girls downed Liberty (Spangle) 3-2 on Oct. 1. Set scores were 23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-27, 15-8.
In that game, Saige Galbreath had 19 kills for the Broncos. She also had 23 digs and 2 blocks.

Meanwhile, Kendall Denny posted 17 kills for the Lancers and Maicy Bothman recorded 24 assists, Zoe Omlin had 41 digs and Brenna Tiegs had 12 blocks.
At press time, the Broncos were on the court in Odessa against the neighboring Tigers.
The Bronco girls were scheduled to host Asotin on Tuesday, Oct. 8, then travel to Colfax on Oct. 10. Those games were scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
