Grizzlies hold off Broncos, 19-14

Lind-Ritzville returns home this Friday

NEWPORT - The Newport Grizzlies held off the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos to win a Northeast 2B matchup, 19-14, Friday night, Sept. 20.

The Grizzlies (3-0) were ranked No. 8 in the state in Class 2B football last week in the Associated Press Poll; the school dropped from the 1A ranks this season.

The Broncos are ranked No. 10.

The Grizzlies drew first blood on a 4-yard run by Brody Driver. The point-after failed and Newport took a 6-0 lead.

In the second quarter, The Broncos would jump head on a 4-yard quarterback keeper by Cameron Boness. Beau Fode added a point to give the Lind-Ritzville boys a 7-6 lead.

But the Grizzlies would answer before halftime, as quarterback Hank Kirkwood lofted a 70-yard pass to Austin Owens for the go-ahead score. Kirkwood added the kick to put Newport back on top, 13-7, at the break.

The score would remain the same until the fourth quarter when Kirkwood would take the ball in from the 5-yard line. The 2-point conversion attempt failed, and the Grizzlies led 19-7.

Seniors Brody Boness and Zach Klein would help the Broncos close the margin, with Brody Boness hitting Klein on a 55-yard touchdown pass late in the game. The kick was good, closing the gap to 19-14.

The completion was the only pass for Brody Boness.

Time would run out before Broncos could score again.

The Broncos (2-1) return home to Jimmy Snider Field this Friday to take on another NE2B rival, the Reardan Screaming Eagles. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
