NINE-YEAR-OLD FATALLY

INJURED IN RIDE MISHAP

OTHELLO - Othello's annual

rodeo was marred last weekend by the

death of a nine-year-old girl, Maxine

Kay Smith, who received fatal injuries

when she was thrown from a small airplane

ridge at the carnival accompanying

the rodeo.

Festivities were just getting underway

about 8:45 p.m. Friday when one

of four "legs" supporting the kiddie'

airplane ride sank about 8 inches into

the ground. The drop caused the airplane

containing Maxine and another small

girl, Judy Cox, to tip at a steep angle.

COUNCIL QUESTIONS

VALUES OF RODEO

Selection of a new city councilman

and the discussion of the probles caused

during the rodeo weekend took up much

of the time of a short city council meeting

Tuesday night. Named to the city

council post vacated by Don Wright was

Dennis Morgan, a law affiliate of Ed

Cross. Morgan will fill the seat until the

next election next year.

Councilman Jerry Crossler, owner

of Whisperin' Palms questioned whether

having the rodeo at Ritzville was enough

of a benefit to the community to offset

the trouble caused by the cowboys and

their followers.

during the first nine days.

"This is as many as we can remember

every having out and we think that

we have a couple more that are getting

their paperwork taken care of so they

can be out, too, said Bronco Coach Mike
