OTHELLO — Adams County Pet Rescue raised $600 more than its goal in less than 24 hours earlier this month.
The shelter faced an unexpected challenge when its commercial washing machine broke down after six years of constant use, officials said. The washing machine ran almost nonstop to meet the laundry needs of the 100 dogs housed at the shelter daily.
A replacement cost $5,000, but Pet Rescue doesn’t have that kind of cash on hand. So, it turned to the community for help, launching a GoFundMe campaign online.
“It’s crucial for disease control that we use a commercial washing machine to help fight infectious diseases that are common in animal shelters,” the GoFundMe page states.
“In less than 24 hours, they hit their $5,000 goal,” Pet Rescue spokesman Jeff Platt said, noting $5,600 was raised to buy the new machine.
Adams County Pet Rescue has been dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abandoned, neglected and abused animals in Adams County and surrounding areas.
The shelter provides necessary medical care before placing the animals in homes, including spaying and neutering.
The new washing machine will help ensure the shelter provides a clean and safe environment for the animals it cares for.
Platt expressed the organization’s gratitude to everyone who contributed and emphasized that ongoing support is always needed.
Donations can still be made through the GoFundMe page at https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-us-get-a-new-commercial-washing-machine.
