Censured incumbent trailing in all but Grant County
SUNNYSIDE - The last Republican congressman who voted to impeach President Donald J. Trump in 2021 has survived his second primary challenge.
But Dan Newhouse of Sunnyside isn't atop the Republican ticket this time in the 4th Congressional District, which includes a portion of western Adams County.
After the initial count in the Tuesday, Aug. 6, general election, Newhouse - who has been censured by Republican committees districtwide - looks like he'll finish a distant second.
NASCAR racer Jerrod Sessler, who is endorsed by the Republican Party, took top honors Tuesday night with 20,703 ballots in the initial count.
Newhouse was second with 17,365 votes.
Tiffany Smiley, a Pasco Republican, is in third place with 13,545 votes, followed by Democrat Mary Baechler in fourth with 10,421 votes.
Only the Top 2 candidates will advance to the Nov. 5 general election.
Here are the vote counts for other candidates trying to unseat Newhouse:
John Malan, 393
Benny Garcia, 658
Barry Knowles, 1,836
"Birdie" Jane Muchlinski, 4,585
Preliminary results show Newhouse leads in only one county, Grant County, where he has a narrow 43 vote margin over Sessler. Sessler is leading in the remaining seven counties in the district.
The final results could change, however, as late-arriving ballots are counted over the coming weeks.
Official results will be certified Aug. 20.
