Spiller, Marmes win inaugural Slinging Iron

WASHTUCNA - A local team won the title of champions at the inaugural Sonny's Slinging Iron Horseshoe Tournament on July 4.

"The team of Sarah Spiller and Gary Marmes, Washtucna residents were the victors," Sonny's Tavern co-owner and horseshoe tournament organizer Bridget Coon said, noting they bested "the father-son duo Jeremy and Cooper Jessup in two final games to win the double-elimination tournament."

Marmes' and Spiller's names will be engraved on a trophy to be displayed in Sonny's Tavern, 250 S.W. Main St. The names of each future year's winning teams will be added.

Coon called the inaugural tournament a success.

"We had 18 teams participate in Sonny's Iron Slinging Open," she said.

At the start of the tournament, Coon said horseshoes had long been a tradition for families getting together for Independence Day.

Looking ahead to 2025, she said she's planning a bigger, better competition.
