DenHerder, Coon tie for R/C entry title
WASHTUCNA — Community leaders are calling the Independence Day celebration a success.
The July 4 event included a Kiddie Parade, Grand Parade and a community barbecue benefiting the Washtucna School band.
“We had a great turnout and so many volunteers pulling together to make it happen,” band instructor and Lion’s Club member Laura Hille said. “The picnic attendees were very generous in their donations to the band, it is very much appreciated!”
About 175 people turned out to watch the 13 parade entries and participate in the community barbecue, officials said.
The parade included its first remote-control category.
Luke Baumann won third place for his entry; Miles DenHerder and Elsie Coon tied for first.
Each winner received a $50 Java Bloom gift certificate
“It was great to see so many come to the events,” Lion’s Club member and Washtucna Community Church Pastor Kriss Bottino said. “We celebrated what we all share in common — family, friends, community and country, rather than what divides or separates us.”

“It was a great day,” she said.
The not-for-profit Innnovia Foundation helped make this year’s event successful by providing support and prizes.
““Fourth of July in Washtucna is a true celebration of community,” said Molly Sanchez, Innovia chief community investment officer. “Innovia Foundation was honored to be part of this long-standing tradition that showcases the town’s hospitality and civic pride. It was inspiring to see so many neighbors working together to make it happen.”
Hille summed up the Independence Day celebration, saying: “All in all, a great day.
