Deputies learn how to rope

Real cowboys train officers for cattle calls

OTHELLO - Adams County deputies got back to their Western roots last week, learning how to lasso livestock.

"Our deputies received valuable training on how to better handle calls involving livestock on roadways, animal issues and other situations requiring the rounding up of animals," Sheriff Dale Wagner said on social media.

The roping training comes as the Sheriff's Office has seen an uptick of loose animal calls.

Since January, Wagner said his deputies have been called out 126 times for catching loose cattle and other animals.

"This training will enhance our ability to assist the community more effectively and safely," he said.

Rafter 19 Stables cowboys Jorge Anguiano and Baldy Horta provided the training. Jake Para recommended the session.

"They taught our deputies how to use a lasso, when it should be used and the best approaches for handling cattle," Wagner said. "Their insights into how cattle respond to being approached were invaluable, helping us improve our techniques for managing these situations.

Wagner called the training educational and fun, and an activity that helped with team building.

"We had a practical and fun time learning from experts who deal with these challenges daily," Wagner said. "We are deeply grateful to Jorge and Baldy for sharing their knowledge with us."
