City council approves projects

RITZVILLE – At a relatively short June 4 meeting, the City Council addressed three primary issues on its “action agenda.”

First was the approval of bid advertisements for two street and sidewalk projects. Both bids will be opened Wednesday, June 26.

One project will involve pavement maintenance and curb ramp replacement covering 2.5 blocks along East First Avenue, from Division Street through mid-block on Palouse Street.

The other project will involve demolition and reconstruction of sidewalks along both sides of Sixth Avenue, from Division to Chelan streets.

The council also authorized the mayor to sign a certificate of substantial completion for the distribution system project undertaken last year by POW Contracting of Spokane.

As previously reported, the council unanimously approved POW Contracting’s first payment for its work on the city water distribution system last September. That payment of $633,455 was roughly a third of the original contract price of $1,714,230.

According to Varela and Associates, which managed POW’s work, the contractor substantially completed the project Dec. 1, 2023.

The council also followed recommendations by Mayor Scott Yaeger and Public Works Director Dave Breazeale to accept bids for window replacement at both City Hall and the golf course club house.

Pella Window and Door of Spokane was the winning bidder for both projects.

The City Hall project will include replacement of 14 existing windows for a price of $28,991.

The same contractor will replace 27 existing windows and a double door at the golf course club house for $37,544.

The city initially budgeted approximately $74,000 for various improvements at the club house. HVAC equipment and miscellaneous appliances were replaced previously.

Completion of the window project will leave about $14,000 in that budget.
