Politicos file for offices

RITZVILLE — Dozens of candidates filed for offices up for grabs this year.

Those officially registering their candidacies during filing week, May 6-10, are:

Adams County

Commissioner District No. 1 — David Lobe, R-Ritzville; Dan Blankenship, R-Ritzville; Hank Rivard, R-Othello; and Jay R.Weise, R-Othello.

Superior Court Judicial Position No. 1 — K. Peter Palubicki of Ritzville.

Othello City Council District No. 1 — Kim Bailey.

Ritzville Ward No. 1 — Heidi Hunt.

Ritzville Ward No. 3 — Randy J. Flyckt

Ritzville Ward No. 4 — Dan Blankenship

Several candidates also filed for Legislative positions for districts that include parts of Adams County. Those candidates include:

Legislative District No. 9

Senate — Mark G. Schoesler, R-Ritzville.

Representative No. 1 — Mary Dye, R-Pomeroy; and Patrick Miller, D- Cheney

Representative No. 2 — Joe Schmick, R- Colfax; Arianna Arends, D-Spokane; and Pam Kohlmeier D-Spokane

Legislative District No. 13

Representative No. 1 — Tom Dent, R-Moses Lake

Representative No. 2 — Alex Ybarra R-Quincy

Filing day also attracted candidates seeking to replace Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Spokane, who is retiring, and Dan Newhouse of Sunnyside.

Newhouse is trying to retain his seat in the 4th Congressional District as a Republican, even though Republican committees in the district previously censured him for voting to impeach President Donald Trump. Newhouse is the only one of 10 Republicans who voted for impeach to still be in Congress.

He is being challenged by Pasco-area farmer Tiffany Smiley, a Republican farmer whose husband was injured in Iraq. The only other Republican running is Jerrod Sessler of Prosser.

Democrats seeking the post are Mary Baechler of Zillah, Jane Muchlinski of Richland, Barry Knowles of Yakima and MAGA Democrat John Malan of Ephrata.

Independent candidate Benny Garcia of Grandview is also running.

The 4th Congressional District covers Central Washington from the Canadian border to Oregon, including western Adams County.

McMorris Rodgers is vacating the 5th Congressional District seat representing Eastern Washington, including Whitman, southern Spokane and eastern Adams and Franklin Counties, among others.

Five Democrats filed, including Carmela Conroy of Spokane, Bernadine Bank of Colbert, Matthew Welde of Liberty Lake, Bobbi Bennett-Wolcott of Pullman and Ann Marie Danimus of Spokane.

Six Republicans also filed, including Brian Dansel of Republic, Rick Valentine Flynn of Cheney, Jacquelin Maycumber of Republic, Jonathan D. Bingle of Spokane, Michael Baumgartner of Spokane and Rene Holaday of Addy.

Race for governor

The gubernatorial race also drew several candidates seeking to replace Gov. Jay Inslee, D-Bainbridge Island, who is not seeking reelection.

Republican candidates include Leoan A. Lawson of Aberdeen, A.L. Brown of Lacey, Jennifer Hoover of Spokane, Martin Lee Wheeler of Fall City, Jim Daniel of Goldendale and Bill Hirt of Bellevue.

Democrats vying for the office include Cassondra Magdalene Hanson of Spokane, Mark Mullet of Issaquah, Ricky Anthony of Tacoma, Chaytan Inman of Vancouver, Fred Grant of Shoreline, Don L. Rivers of Seattle, El’ona Kearney of Seattle, Edward Cale IV of Seattle and Robert “Bob” Ferguson of Seattle.

Nonpartisan gubernatorial candidates are Brian Bogen of Cle Elum, Semi Bird of Richland, Brad Mjelde of Covington, Jim Clark of Lake Stevens, Alan Makayev of Tacoma, Leon A. Lawson of Aberdeen, Michael DePaula of Seattle, Andre Stackhouse of Seattle, Alex Tsimerman of Bellevue, Rosetta Marshall-Williams of Maple Valley, Jeff Curry of Olympia, Frank Dare of Olympia and William Combs of Dayton.

Candidates who filed for other statewide positions include:

Attorney General — Nick Brown, D-Seattle; Pete Serrano, R- Pasco; Nick Brown, D- Seattle; and Manka Dhingra, D-Redmond.

Auditor — Matt Hawkins, R-Spokane Valley; and Pat (Patrice) McCarthy, D-Seattle.

Commissioner of Public Lands — Sue Kuehl Pederson, R-Lakewood; Allen Lebovitz, D- Olympia; Dave Upthegrove, D-Seattle; Patrick DePoe, D-Seattle; Jaralee Anderson, D-Redmond; Kevin Van De Wege, D-Lake Sutherland; and Jaime Herrera Beutler of Battle Ground. Beutler, who prefers the Republican party, repudiated by the party for voting to impeach President Trump. She was one of the last nine Republicans to lose their seat in an election immediately following their vote to impeach Trump.

Insurance Commissioner — Patty Kuderer of Seattle, Jonathan Hendrix of Seattle, Bill Boyd of Spokane, Phil Fortunato of Auburn, Tim Verzal of Meridian, Justin Murta of Snohomish, Chris D. Chung of Lakewood and John Pestinger of Seattle.

Lieutenant Governor — Bob Hagglund, R-Lake Stevens; Dan Matthews, R-Mukilteo; David Griffin, D- Lake Stevens; Denny Heck, D-Olympia; and Patrick “Pat” Haman, R-Oak Harbor.

Secretary of State — Dale Whitaker, R-Spokane; Marquez Tiggs, D- Seattle; and Steve Hobbs, D-Lake Stevens.

State Treasurer — Mike Pellicciotti, D-Seattle; Sharon Hanek, R- Bonney Lake

Superintendent of Public Instruction — Chris Reykdal of Tumwater, John Patterson Blair of Vashon, David Olson of Tacoma and Reid Saaris of Seattle

Supreme Court

Position No. 2 — Sal Mungia of Seattle, Todd A. Bloom of Tacoma, David R. Shelvey of Sumner and Dave Larson of Federal Way.

Position No. 8 — Steve Gonzalez of Seattle

Position No. 9 — Sheryl Gordon McCloud of Seattle

Candidates who filed will face off in the August primary election, with the Top 2 candidates in each race advancing to the November general election.
