Stumpjumpers take over

Thousands attend 52nd running of Desert 100

Area youth among those racing at Irby

IRBY - Five area youth were among the racers competing in events during the Stumpjumpers 52nd annual Desert 100 race weekend.

Competing Saturday, April 6, in youth divisions, Greyson Thompson of Lind finished 34th and Emmett Green of Ritzville 72nd in a field of more than 80 young competitors pitting their skills and small motorcycles against the rough sage-steppe near the former town of Irby, off state Highway 28 west of Odessa.

In the ages 9-10 division, Hank Walter of Odessa finished 31st.

And in the 11-12 division, Hudson Walter of Odessa finished 16th and Wade Green of Ritzville 24th.

The youth events Saturday were a prelude to Sunday's finale, where riders raced on a 50-mile course in relay, 50-mile and 100-mile races.

The official results of the final Desert 100 events were not available at press time.

On Friday, thousands of riders also joined in desert poker runs and other events.

Officials estimated more than 11,000 people spent part of the weekend camping and riding in Desert 100 events.
