Arrest two on liquor charges

Sheriff Schafer and Deputy Oestreich, accompanied by Grant County deputies, made some raids last Thursday. They searched the place of Jacob Kagele, Jr., in the northwest part of the county. They found a gallon of moonshine in a trap door under a stairway and nine other gallons on the premises, also two 6-gallon stills in a hole in the ground. He was brought to town and was fined $500 and costs by Justice Womach and given a 90 day jail sentence. This was suspended on good behavior.

Fred Janke, also a resident of that part of the county, was visited and two quarts of liquor and a still was found on his place. He was fined $500 and costs. Both paid their fines.

8 rail workers in trouble at Ritzville, Lind

Eight Northern Pacific railroad workers ran afoul of local justice last week. Two laborers assigned to the section crew at Ritzville fell into disagreement Tuesday evening near the Farmers' Supply company warehouse, where the tracks cross Adams Street, and began to settle their difficulties through fisticuffs. One of the pugilists, Albert H. Gilliland, departed from the scene to file a complaint charging the other, Charle Shutt, with assault in the third degree. Night Officer George Oestreich made the arrest.

Seven NP men at the railroad camp in Lind received their pay checks last Tuesday and by Friday night they were having quite a time. Finally Sheriff Frank Lucas was summoned and he bundled the merry-makers into the county paddy wagon for a trip to Ritzville.

Deputy prosecutor arrested Saturday

The newest member of the Adams County Prosecutor's team, Dennis R. Scott, found himself on the inside of the Pend Oreille County Jail Saturday after police arrested him for conspiracy to deliver a controlled substance-cocaine. Scott was hired by prosecutor Gary Brueher on March 1 to prosecute criminal matters for Adams County. Brueher expressed surprise Monday at the arrest which took place on Saturday involving Scott. "No decision will be made until I speak with Dennis Scott," said Brueher. "If Mr. Scott is involved with illegal drugs, his employment will be terminated. However, at this time it would be premature to speculate."
