Trump, Biden rematch looms

RITZVILLE - Following the Tuesday, March 12, primary in Washington and other states, its appears that voters will see a rematch in the race for U.S. President.

Both former President Republican Donald J. Trump and current Democrat President Joseph R. Biden Jr. secured enough support to become the presumptive nominees for their parties.

In Washington state, 1.25 million voters cast ballots in the primary election.

Donald J. Trump

Trump received 442,048 votes statewide, or 73.8% of Republican votes cast. Former candidate Nikki Haley was a distant second with 129,394 votes, or 21.6%, followed by former candidate Ron Desantis with 12,979 votes, or 2.2%.

Joseph R. Biden Jr.

Biden received 559,996 votes, or 85.7% of Democrat votes. But 7.4% of Democrats cast uncommitted ballots.

Statewide, only 47.8% of the voter turnout was Republican.

In Adams County, 222 Democrats, 84.7%, turned out for Biden. Dean Phillips was a distant second with 20 votes, or 7.6%.

On the Republican side, Adams County party members preferred Trump, who received 1,122 votes, or 82.3%. Haley lagged far behind with only 194 votes, or 14.2%.

Overall, Republicans made up 83.4% of the voters who cast ballots in Adams County in the primary election.

Franklin County

Franklin County, too, went overwhelmingly for Trump and Biden.

Trump received, 6,061 votes, or 81.5%, from Republican voters. Haley, was second here, too, with 1,105 votes, or 14.9%.

Democrats broke for Biden with 85.5% support, or 2,214 votes. But a lot of Democrats also said they are not committed to Biden or any other candidate. In fact, "uncommitted" received 142 votes, or 5.5%.

Of the overall voters casting ballots in Franklin County, 74.0% were Republican.

Whitman County

In nearby Whitman County, support for both Trump and Biden slipped. Trump received 71.4% of Republican votes while Biden received 82.9% of Democratic votes.

Here, too, there were a lot of uncommitted Democrats, with 7.3%, or 176 voters, saying they did not support Biden or any other candidate.

Haley had more support in Franklin County than any candidate except Trump. She received 939 votes, or 23.21%.

In Whitman County, 72.6% over voters turning out for the primary were Republican.
