Broncos win district wrestling title

Eight qualify for regional tournament

SPOKANE - Eight Bronco boys placed in the Top 4 at districts Saturday, Feb. 3, and will advance to regional wrestling.

Broncos bringing home district gold medals include Alexander Bonner at 132 pounds, Carson Kubik at 144, Gabriel Smith at 215 and Brock Tracy at 285. Local silver medalists include Octavio Paredes Martinez at 115 and Pete Spain at 150.

No Broncos struck bronze, but Wyatt Rossman finished fourth at 138 to qualify for regionals, as did Turner Slack at 144.

Overall, the Broncos won the team title for the Northeast 2B-South League with 202.0 points. Liberty (Spangle) was second with 153.0 and Northwest Christian (Colbert) was third with 128.0 points.

The St. John-Endicott Eagles were 11th with 15 points.

Bonner won his 132-pound title, receiving byes into the finals, where he pinned Dillon Gassenberg of Colfax in 46 seconds.

Kubik also opened with a bye, but pinned Alton Burt of Colfax in the semifinals at 144 in 50 seconds. In the championship, he won an 11-0 major decision over Hudson Somes of Northwest Christian.

At 215, Smith followed a similar route to gold, opening with a bye and then pinning Kyron Clovis of Asotin in the semifinals in 58 seconds. In the title match, he pinned Carson Durbin of Reardan in 3:46.

Tracy, at 285 pounds, also received a bye to open. He then pinned Malachi Lewis of Asotin in 33 seconds in the semifinals and Justin Boyea of Asotin in 2:00 in the title match to win gold.

Martinez reached the 113-pound finals after opening with a bye, then pinning David Phillips of Northwest Christian in 4:53 in the semifinals. In the championship bout, he was pinned by Caiden Kassel of Liberty Launch Academy.

Spain had to pin two opponents to reach the 150-pound finals. He pinned Austin Campbell of Colfax in 3:24 in the quarterfinals and then Thorne Tissue of Liberty in 2:26 in the semifinals. In the title match, he was pinned by Maddex Strobel of Liberty in 2:11.

At 138, Wyatt Rosman had a difficult route to regionals.

He opened by pinning Nikita Bakhtin of Northwest Christian in 2:17, then was pinned by Carson Kline of Reardan in 1:23. In the wrestlebacks, he pinned Raymond Lasz of Liberty in 4:52. And in the match for third-place, he was pinned by Moxon Strobel of Liberty in 4:30 to earl the last regional berth.

At 144, Slack opened with a bye, and then was pinned by Hudson Somes of Northwest Christian in 18 seconds in the semifinals. In the match for third- he was pinned by Alton Burt of Colfax in 49 seconds to qualify for regionals.

The Broncos also have several regional alternates - Wyatt Gibler at 113, Waylon Rosman at 120, Travis Redburn at 175 and Malachi Jaynes Turner at 285. They all finished fifth at their respective weights.

113 pounds - Wyatt Gibler pinned Landyn Murphy of Davenport in 2:54 to open the tournament, then lost to Caiden Kassel of Liberty Launch Academy by pin in 43 seconds. In the wrestlebacks, he was pinned by Cameron Mathia of St. John in 2:03 and then won by fifth place when Landyn Murphy of Davenport forfeited.

120 pounds– Waylon Rosman opened with a 2:50 pin of Noah Everett of Davenport, then was pinned by Nakoa Rocha of Northwest Christian in 3:13. In the wrestlebacks, he was pinned by Wayland Holmberg of Davenport in 3:38 and then pinned Cooper Rushing of Lind-Ritzville in 3:19.

120 pounds – Cooper Rushing was pinned in 1:57 in his opening match by Nakoa Rocha of Northwest Christian. He then pinned Noah Everett of Davenport in 4:05 before being pinned by Cody Phillips of Colfax in 2:50. In the match for fifth, he was pinned by teammate Waylon Rosman in 3:19 to finish sixth.

175 pounds – Travis Redburn opened with a bye, and then lost an 11-9 decision to Sterling McLaughlin of Reardan. In the wrestlebacks, he pinned Ethan Reid of Northwest Christian in 1:39 and then Cameron Clovis of Asotin in 1:43, before losing a 7-4 decision to Peyton Cannon of Pomeroy. In the match for fifth-place, Redburn won a 2-0 decision over Koyen Fortune of Waitsburg.

190 pounds – Traye Redburn opened with a 12-3 major decision over Carter Bowman of Asotin, but was pinned by Brock Gustaveson of Davenport in 2:46 in the quarterfinals. In the wrestlebacks, he pinned Carl Medhaug of Davenport in 1:55, but was eliminated by Jarod Hankins of Waitsburg, who pinned him in 41 seconds.

190 pounds – John Branham opened by pinning Carl Medhaug of Davenport in 2:55. He was pinned in the quarterfinals by Curtis Winona of Pomeroy in 44 seconds. In the wrestlebacks, he pinned Carter Bowman of Asotin in 3:53 before being elimninated by Coleman Green of Liberty, who pinned him in 31 seconds.

285 pounds –Malachi Jaynes Turner was pinned in his opening match in 52 seconds by Malachi Lewis of Asotin. He then received a bye, before being pinned by Tristen Burd of Colfax in 11 seconds. He received a bye to finish fifth.
