Boys split with Liberty, St. George's

RITZVILLE – The Broncos boys basketball team split last week, edging Liberty but losing a heartbreaker to St. George’s.

St. George’s (13-5, 10-2 in league), edged the Broncos (8-10, 5-7 in league) 50-47 on Jan. 24.

The loss came a day after the Broncos edged the Lancers (8-9, 5-6 in league) 39-36 on Jan. 23.

Both games were back-and-forth battles.

Against St. George’s, the Broncos took an 11-10 lead after the first quarter, but trailed 24-22 at the half. After three, they retook the lead 35-34.

But St. George’s rallied in the final stanza to outscore the Broncos, 16-12, and win the game 50-57.

Shawn Jones led all scorers with 20 points for the Dragons, followed by teammate Elden Pierce with 15.

Senior Brock Kinch led Lind-Ritzville/Sprague with 13. Shawn Steinberger added 10 for the Broncos.

Others scoring points for the Broncos included Zach Klein and Blake Earle, 5 each; Bridge Moore and Lance Williamson, with 7 each.

Against the Lancers, it was Steinberger leading the Broncos, putting 14 points on the board. Liberty’s Jack Wilson also scored 14.

Bronco scorers included Klein and Kinch, 6 points each; Moore with 4 and Williamson with 9 (all from beyond the 3-point arc).

The Broncos had 13 fouls in the game, compared to 12 for Liberty.

Liberty jumped out to a 9-8 first quarter lead in the Jan. 23 matchup. The Broncos outscored the Lancers in the second quarter, 7-5, to take a 15-14 lead into the break.

In the third quarter, the Lancers closed the margin by a point; heading into the fourth quarter, the score was tied at 27. The Broncos, however, took the lead in the final quarter and held on to win 39-36.
