Bronco girls head to state

Volleyball team opens against Coupeville

MEAD – Three of the Top 5 Northeast 2B girls volleyball teams will compete in the state tournament in the Yakima Valley SunDome this Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 8 and 9.

During District 6/7 crossover games Saturday, Colfax, Liberty (Spangle) and Lind-Ritzville/Sprague punched their ticket into the Yakima Valley SunDome with victories.

The Lancers topped the Brewster Bears, 3-1; Colfax swept Tonasket, 3-0; and the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague girls eliminated the Lake Roosevelt Raiders, 3-0.

Individual statistics were not reported.

The NE2B teams spiked from the postseason are Jenkins (Chewelah), which was swept by Manson, and Northwest Christian (Colbert), which was swept by Okanogan.

The state tournament opens today, with the first game at 9:45 a.m. That matchup features No. 3-ranked Colfax against No. 14 Walla Walla Valley Academy on Court 2.

At 9:45 a.m., the No. 5-ranked Broncos (17-2) will face No. 12 Coupeville on Court No. 5.

Liberty sees action as the underdog at 11:45 a.m., when the No. 13-ranked Lancers face No. 4 Goldendale.

While games get underway this morning, Lind-Ritzville school community was already in the midst of state excitement Tuesday.

The local girls practiced in the morning, then the high school hosted a send-off celebration at 12:45 p.m. in the commons.

The volleyball team then was scheduled to swing by Ritzville Grade School and then Lind elementary and middle schools en route to Yakima.

The Broncos are the only area team to make a state appearance this year.

Both the St. John-Endicott/LaCrosse and Odessa girls will make the trip to the SunDome to play in the Class 1B tournament.

Odessa slipped into the tournament as the No. 9 seed and St. John-Endicott as No. 10.

The St. John-Endicott Eagles will open state play at 1:30 p.m. today on Court 1 against No. 7-ranked Waterville-Mansfield.

The Odessa Tigers will open state play against No. 8-ranked Orcas Island at 3:30 p.m. today.
