Local and Personal

Monday night was hallowe'en, and Ritzville did not escape the usual boy tricks and jokes.

Marshal Rettig last Saturday arrested Chas. Frederick for the offense of trying to hurt somebody. Mr. Frederick paid his fine of $25 and costs and was released.

Those delusive fakirs that with their "snaps" and "free" goods have been patrolling our streets the past week should get the hearty kicking out they deserve. The humbuggery and swindling of these "hoodoos" is simply preposterous and if allowed to carry on their "games" at will our home merchants and businessmen will have to resort to the same tactics to get even and in the end we will have only these tramp salesmen and respectable businessmen will be a dream of the past.

Local Brevities

E.A. Johnson, Othello butcher, was given a fine of $100 and costs and ten days in jail Monday by Justice Womack on two charges of drunkenness. He was brought up Sunday on one charge, but on his plea to be permitted to return to Othello to look after his business he was released on bond of $100. The flowing bottle proved more alluring than business and he was arrested again here and held for trial. He returned to place a man in his shop and is to begin serving his sentence next Tuesday.

Auditor expects at least

2,000 voters in county

Unless another dust storm blows up, more than 2,000 Adams County residents are expected to have their official say on everything from President of the United States to local precinct committeemen in the general election next Tuesday, November 2. Mrs. Marie Seematter, county auditor, made the prediction this week as registration books closed with a total of 3,534 names listed on the rolls.

Ranchers protest Shorelines act

John Faure returned Sunday from Ranchers along Cow Creek appeared in protest to proposals by the State Department of Ecology to regulate that stream's use and developments along its borders. The appearance was at a hearing held Monday by the Board of Adams County Commissioners on enactment of a proposed Shorelines ordinance. Though the county administers the legislation locally, it has little to say what shall be regulated. Alarm over possibility of regulation arose only Sunday when, in response to an inquiry of rancher Dick Coon of Washtucna, the county sanitarian, Mike Schleicher of Othello advised that Cow Creek and Nigger Lake definitely were included in the ordinance proposed.

Nethercutt promises

payments to farmers

Rep. George Nethercutt delivered a message to area farmers that could mean the difference in keeping area farms productive when he met with voters Saturday afternoon at the Circle T Inn. While Nethercutt said he couldn't help solve the city's power shortage that started shortly before his arrival, he did say area famers would be receiving "transition payments" of about 33 cents a bushel, hopefully within a month's time.
