Melcher wins bronze in 200-meter

YAKIMA – Senior Hayden Melcher brought home two medals Saturday from the state track and field meet at Zaepfel Field, setting the pace for the Broncos who reached the competition.

Melcher grabbed a bronze medal in the boys 200-meter, finishing third with a time of 22.75 seconds, a personal record.

He reached the finals with a fourth-place showing in the preliminaries.

Senior Anthony Wright of Oroville and Max O'Neill of Napavine finished first and second, respectively, while Northeast 2B rival Cody Gilroy of Jenkins (Chewelah) finished fourth.

Melcher also brought home a fourth place medal in the 100-meter, with a finals time of 11.36 seconds, 0.4 seconds behind third place finisher Gilroy and his 100-meter preliminary time.

Wright and O'Neill, were first and second, respectively, in that event as well.

The Broncos 4X100 boys relay team also reached the finals.

The team of sophomore J.P. McAnally, junior Shawn Steinberger, freshman Damon Schilling and Melcher finished sixth in the preliminary heat with a time of 45.83 seconds. But the team was disqualified in the finals and finished seventh overall.

The Kittitas team won the 4X100 in 44.18 seconds, followed by Coupeville in 44.36.

Meanwhile, two Bronco girls also brought home hardware.

Senior Myra Miller finished fifth at state in the girls discuss, with a throw of 108-07.

Raymond's Karsyn Freeman won girls discus with a toss of 129-00, followed by Brewster's Gimena Hurtado with 116-06.

In girls pole vault, Bronco freshman Zoe Galbreath brought home a sixth-place finish, clearing 8-06.

The event was won by Ella Marvin of Rainier, who cleared 9-09.

Galbreath also qualified for state in the girls 400-meter.

She posted a respectable 10th-place finish with a time in 1:06.68 in the preliminaries, not good enough to reach the finals.

Afton Wood of Okanogan won the girls 400-meter with a time of 59.02.

Overall, the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Bronco boys finished 23rd overall with 11 team points. St. George's won the boys team state title with 52 team points, followed by Northeast 2B rival Jenkins with 48.

For the girls, the Broncos finished 28th overall with 7 team points.

St. George's girls were first with 118 team points, followed by Okanogan with 111.33.

Northeast 2B rival Davenport was fourth with 33.33 points.
