Broncos struggle at sub-regionals

Steinberger takes second in boys long jump

RITZVILLE – Bronco boys and girls looked for regional berths Tuesday, May 9, at the Northeast 2B Sub-District meet on Jimmie Snider Field.

But the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague athletes struggled to gain traction in the meet that included 10 teams.

The boys finished seventh with 25 team points

The girls finished tied for ninth with Colfax, each with just 2 points.

The top athletes in each class advance to regionals this Friday and Saturday, May 19 and 20, in Colfax. The first event there gets underway at 4 p.m. Friday.

In the sub-district meet, several Bronco boys had Top 10 finishes.

Junior Shawn Steinberger had the best finish for the local boys.

In setting a persona record, Steinberger was second in long jump with a leap of 17-08.50.

Freshman Damon Schilling was fifth in the 100-meter with a time of 12.81 seconds.

In the 200-meter, sophomore J.P. McAnally was ninth in 26.30.

Junior Bridger Moore was fifth in the 400-meter with a time of 59.02.

And Caleb Heater led the local distance runners with a fifth-place finish in the 1,600-meter with a time of 5:44.57. He also finished seventh in javelin with a flight of 99-03.

Also on the field, Bronco freshman Aidan Miller finished ninth in shot put with a toss of 28-03.25. He topped that with a sixth-place finish in discus with a throw of 83-09.

Only one local girl scored points in the meet.

Sophomore Danika Cox was seventh overall in the girls long jump with a leap of 12-04.75.
