Audience thrills to high school tug-of-war competition
RITZVILLE - On a hot Wednesday, May 3, afternoon last week, supporters gathered on bleachers near the high school gymnasium to watch the second Mud War tug-of-war competition.
As music blared from loudspeakers, teams of high schoolers grabbed a thick rope and yanked in frantic opposition, slipping and sliding – and dunking one another as they battled for victory in a rectangular tank of goo.
The competition pitted Lind-Ritzville High School classes against one another, each class dressed in theme attire.
Three freshmen groups competed, each team sporting a different outfit and introduced to the backdrop of a corresponding theme song.
Team Camo
strutted to a ballad by the rock'n'roll group, Guns -N-Roses.
The Minions, dressed in yellow costumes, appeared under the watchful eye of teacher Joseph Roach.
The Superheroes strode past the audience as "Avengers" music played.
Three sophomore groups were up next.
The Princesses, led by Michelle Balfe, sauntered to "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" from the film "Cinderella."
The Police marched to the strains of "Bad Boys."
And The Hawaiians, dressed in flamboyant flowered garb, chose "Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride" as their theme song.
The junior class entered one team - the Ninjas, dressed appropriately in black. They glided past the bleachers to the strains of "Ninja Turtles."
The Patriots - the sole senior class offering - was outfitted in red, white and blue costumes. The team strutted to "Party in the USA."
High School Principal Kevin Terris served as the master of ceremonies, while Paul McAnally and Bryce Court managed the mud pit and score board.
For the next 60 minutes, the teams battled through a double-elimination bracket.
Screaming grade-schoolers watched from across the street and older folks sitting in the bleachers clapped and cheered and shouted for their favorite teams.
After an hour of grueling battle in the muck and mire, the Patriots (seniors) took home the first-place trophy.
The Minions (freshmen) garnered the Spirit Award and the Princesses (sophomores) were recognized as Best Dressed.
