Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887

Miss Lind-Ritzville takes center stage

Local royalty speaks during City Council

RITZVILLE - Madison Bartlett was 8 years old when her family moved to Adams County.

For the past eight years, she has worked in her family's business during weekends and the summer.

That experience, she said, has given her insight into the lifestyles and culture here.

As the new Miss Lind-Ritzville, Bartlett spoke about her background during the March 7 City Council meeting.

Bartlett serves as Associated Student Body president at Washtucna High School, secretary of the local Future Business Leaders of America and vice-president of the local Future Farmers of America chapters.

"But band is my favorite hobby" she said.

Bartlett has played trumpet in the pep band and participated in honor jazz band, the University of Montana All-Star Band and the Oompa's and Ma's polka band at the annual Deutchesfest in Odessa.

She's also taken up guitar and trombone, and hopes to hone her skills next year as a band director for the middle school or high school, she said.

Bartlett is no slouch when it comes to pursuing her passions.

Her college aspirations also tend toward music. Bartlett is considering Whitworth, Eastern Washington or Washington State universities, where she plans to major in music education.

"I'm so proud to have been raised in Ritzville - a place that exemplifies family, friends and small-town values," she said.

Sara Dirks, director of this year's program, is effusive in her praise for Bartlett.

"Madison has rolled with the punches and surpassed her benchmarks," she said. "Her attitude has been wonderful. She'll have a fun parade season this year, and hopefully Madison's experience will encourage other girls to participate."

Dirks said her favorite part of the program is witnessing the growth of girls who get involved.

"It happens so organically," she said. "Regardless of the outcome, girls are going to gain something priceless."
