Smith, Tracy place at Mat Classic

Broncos win medals at 195 and 285

TACOMA - One Bronco wrestler brought home bronze and another fifth-place Saturday, Feb. 18, from the state Mat Classic wrestling tournament in the Tacoma Dome.

Wrestling for Lind-Ritzville at 195 pounds, Gabe Smith took third place and earned 16 team points for the Broncos. Meanwhile, teammate Brock Tracy took fifth place at 285 pounds.

Overall, Lind-Ritzville finished 18th with team 31 points. Tonasket won the team title with 202.5 points.

Smith opened the state tournament by pinning Gabriel Serna of Warden in 58 seconds.

In the quarterfinals, he would face eventual champion Johnny Swartsel of Okanogan.

Swartsel edged Smith, 8-1 to advance to the semifinals. Meanwhile, Smith dropped to the consolation bracket.

But in the wrestlebacks, he won a narrow, 4-2, decision over Carson Durbin of Reardan to reach the match for third-place.

In his final bout, Smith won a 9-5 decision over Gage Grigsby of Ocosta to win bronze.

At 285, Tracy, too, opened with a win for the Broncos, pinning Jonathan Harty of Napavine in 1:45.

But like his 195-pound teammate, he ran into an Okanogan grappler in the quarterfinals.

Joseph Cates, Okanogan, won a 6-2 decision over Tracy to advance, while knocking Tracy to the consolation rounds.

Tracy won his first and second consolation matches by pin to reach Day 2 of the state tournament.

He pinned Aaron Winans of Kalama in 2:31 and then Adin Wollum of North Beach in 26 seconds, to enter the medal rounds.

Tyler Pettigrew of Jenkins High School in Chewelah would hand Tracy his second state loss with a pin in 1:40.

The loss moved Tracy to the bout for fifth place, where he won a 3-0 decision over Kaden Hippler of Kettle Falls
