Two Broncos bring home bronze

COLBERT — Two local boys brought home medals Saturdary from the Crusader Classic wrestling tournament at Northwest Christian School.

Waylon Rosman finished third at 106 pounds and Grabriel “Gabe” Smith third at 182.

The Broncos wrestling team tied for 10th place in the 18-team annual tournament.

St. Maries, Idaho, dominated the tournament, winning the team title with 342 points, followed by Riverside (Nine Mile Falls) with 182.

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague/Washtucna/Harrington Broncos and Pomeroy Pirates tied at 10th with 56 points.

Rosman scored 19 of those points, by pinning Javin Michaelsen of Mount Spokane in 49 seconds before being pinned in 3:42 in the semifinals by Nakoa Rocha of Northwest Christian.

In the third place bout, he pinned Michael Nyman of Kootenai, Idaho, in 2:55, for the bronze.

Broncos teammate Wyatt Gibler went 0-2 at the same weight. He was pinned by Rocha in 5:39 in the opening match and then losing in a 6-0 decision to Colby Scarpelli of Riverside (Nine Mile Falls).

At 126, Kaleb Kuykendall also lost twice for the Broncos. He lost his first match to Nathan Finley of Mary Walker after being disqualified and then was pinned by Harvest Parrish of Almira/Coulee-Hartine in 2:36.

Pete Spain also lost two bouts without a win.

At 152 pounds, he was pinned by Bryan Bosworth of Jenkins (Chewelah) in 1:44 and then by Nathan Rasmussen of Selkirk in 2:00.

At 170, Travis Redburn opened by being pinned by Daniel Doheny-Boyle of Rogers in 4:44. In the consolation round, however, he pinned William Del Pizzo of Mount Spokane in 1:29 to advance to the match for fifth/sixth. In that final bout, he lost a 5-1 decision to Riley Jones of Kettle Falls to finish sixth.

Smith earned his bronze medal and scored 15 team points by winning two matches.

He lost his opener in a 2-1 decision to John Pierce of Almira/Coulee-Hartline. Then in the consolation rounds, he pinned Arian Renshow of Rogers in 1:00.

In the match for third-place, he won a 9-3 decision over Dylan Valadez of Mary Walker to bring home bronze.

Brock Tracy finished sixth for the Broncos at 285 pounds.

He opened the tournament by pinning Antonio Christensen of East Valley (Spokane Valley) in 3:19, but was pinned in the quarterfinals by Tyler Pettigrew of Jenkins in 1:32.

In the consolation rounds, Tracy would win by forfeit over Jacob Schuch of Riverside and then lose by fall to Kiaden Hippler of Kettle Falls in 2:28.

In girls wrestling, Emmy Klewin also competed in the tournament in the girls 155-pound class.

Klewin also wrestled last Tuesday in the league girls meet in Newport, as senior Bronco Myra Miller, who was at 170.

The girls results were not reported in those events.

The boys results from Davenport were not availble.

The Broncos will be at home Thursday and then host the Bronco Invite on Saturday.
