Broncos head to Okanogan

RITZVILLE – Two teams that could’ve been in the state 2B title football game will face off in a District 6/7 crossover game Friday night, with one of their seasons coming to an end.

The No. 3-ranked Lind-Ritzville/Sprague/Washutcna/Harrington boys football team will travel to No. 2-ranked Okanogan for the crossover game. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

At 9-0, Okanogan is a perennial football powerhouse. This season, they’ve already crushed several other ranked teams..At 7-1, the local Broncos have also upended some top-ranked teams.

The only common opponent the Broncos and Bulldogs have is the Jenkins Cougars. The Broncos beat them, 25-18, on Oct. 7. The Bulldogs blew out the Cougars, 34-7, on Sept. 30.

How did the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked teams end up head to head in an elimination game before the state playoffs begin – a predetermined number draw.

That draw was the result of a three-way tie atop the NE2B, with the Broncos beating Jenkins and losing to the Liberty (Spangle) Lancers. The Lancers topped the Cougars setting up the predetermined number draw as a tiebreaker.

The number draw wasn’t required. There’s are three-way ties in other leagues and classifications that will are being determined this week with Texas and other tiebreakers. This tiebreaker was left to chance.

But the Broncos will be riding high into Okanogan after the local boys dominated Asotin, 48-0, last week.
