Herbert Hoover Janzen

Herbert Hoover Janzen, 93, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2022 in Cheney, Wash. after a long and wonderful life serving his Lord and Savior. He was born Nov. 13, 1928 in New York to parents Mary Dirks and Peter Martin Janzen. He married the love of his life, Terry Grimmesey on June 19, 1948 in Lordsburg, NM. God blessed them with just shy of 74 years together. They raised six children: Ronald Janzen, Christina Smith, Debi (Tom) Balfe, Orris (Teresa) Janzen, Leslie (Carolyn) Janzen, and Maria Janzen.

Herbert lived his early years in California and graduated from Chaffey High School in 1946. He moved to Ritzville, Wash. in the fall of 1949 to start a painting business with his father. He and his father built a house and apartment building on 4th Avenue in Ritzville. In 1968 he joined the State Highway Department until his retirement in 1994.

Herbert was a member of the Menno Mennonite Church and held many offices in the church throughout the years, served on the Ritzville City Council and was very active in the Ritzville Lions Club. He served on various community committees over the years.

He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Mary Janzen, brother Heinz Janzen, sister Margaret Janzen, son Ronald Janzen, daughter Maria Janzen, grandson Jeromy Smith, great granddaughter Miranda Smith and son-in-law Roger Smith.

He is survived by his loving wife Terry Janzen, sister Metta Lieb, children Christina, Debi, Orris, and Leslie. God blessed him with 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Cheney Care Center staff, Hospice Spokane and their longtime Doctor Charles Sackmann for the loving care they gave to our father. We are thankful for the spiritual support given by Emily Toews and Bryce Miller, Pastors of Menno Mennonite Church.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Danekas Funeral Home in Ritzville, WA 99169. Reception to follow.
