Highway shuttered by wintry weather

WASHTUCNA – State Highway 26 was closed early Monday as plows tried to clear drifting snow from the roadway.

The highway was just one between from her to Colfax that had to be shut down.

State Highway 127, which connects the town of Dusty to U.S. Highway 12 east of Dayton was also shuttered.

Around the region, multiple roads were closed in Whitman and Spokane counties, and elsewhere.

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph pushed drifts across roadways, prompting several school districts to shut down for the day or delay school opening for 2 hours.

According to the National Weather Service, road conditions were supposed to get worse before getting better.

The National Weather Service was predicting another 1-2 inches of snow to fall across Adams and Whitman Counties by Tuesday.

After the next winter storm passes, meteorologists are predicting warmer temperatures with a chance of rain.
