RITZVILLE – A local girl is among the finalists competing for 2022 state Distinguished Young Women Program title.
Lind-Ritzville High School senior Dakota Killian is among the 11 girls vying to replace Kari Largent of Colfax in representing the state.
The contest will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 7.
Due to the Wuhan coronavirus, there will not be an audience present for judging, officials said. The program is expected to air on Dintinguished Young Women Program’s social media.
Other participants include Abby Whitemarsh of Ellensburg, Jessica Cochran of Chewelah, Macy Hardin of Clarkston, Denni Fealy of Garfield-Palouse, Adyson Shafer of Almira-Coulee/Hartline, Esther Roeber of Moses Lake, Katie Wheatley of Pullman, Maggie Meyer of Colton-Uniontown, Ava Hasenoehrl of Clarkston and Emma Bryson of Colfax.
Killian, a resident of Ritzville, plans to attend Brigham Young University. After college, she wants to pursue a career as a journalist or author.
She is the daughter of Gordon and Lisa Killian.
During the pageant, Killian will perform a piano solo, “Qi,” by Phildel, according to the organizers.
The girls will be judged on talent, fitness, self-expression and academic achievement, organizers said.
During this 64th annual event, thousands of scholarship dollars are up for grabs, event co-chairwoman Danielle Kallaher of Pullman said, noting the goal of the program is to emphasize education by providing scholarship opportunities to high school girls headed to college.
Killian was chosen to represent the Lind-Ritzville community from among four girls vying for the Distringuished Young Women local title.
Sydney Kinch was selected First Finalist at the local contest earlier this year. Ameila Court and Annika Holland were selected Second Finalists.
All four local girls received scholarships, but Killian has the opportunity to win more as well as the state title.
