LIND — The Lind Combo Derby has been cancelled for this year.
Derrick Laird, Lind Lions Club President, said there were "more than a handful of reasons" to cancel the annual event.
"Our biggest concern was being thrown back down into Phase 2, and keeping it safe for everybody," Laird said. "And being in Phase 3, the number of people who could attend wouldn't justify the expense of holding it."
The decision was made Wednesday, April 21, with a vote taken among the Lind Lions Club members.
"For the most part, it was a pretty unanimous vote to postpone it," Laird said. "Nobody wanted to, but we all knew the right decision. We could get a week before the event, and get shut back down. It's a bummer, but there were just a lot of "ifs" at stake."
The Derby was scheduled for the second weekend in June.
"We'll re-evaluate next spring for the Combo Derby, and play it by ear and see what happens," Laird said. "That's really all we can do right now."
Laird said this is his first full year as club president, so he will serve again next year.
The next event at the Derby Grounds will be Northwest Rally's May Madness Rallycross May 1-2.
"Northwest Rally is using the grounds, and the Lions Club will run the cook shack for take-out burgers," Laird said.
The event starts at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and ends at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 2.
