Washington state boaters must pass safety course
OLYMPIA – The annual "Spring Aboard" campaign, which the state uses to provide information on how to enroll in a boating safety class, will run from Mar. 21-27.
The program was developed by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and produced by a grant administered under the U.S. Coast Guard.
Under Washington state law, boaters who operate a vessel with a 15-horsepower engine or greater must be certified, and carry a Boater Education Card to prove they passed an accredited boating safety education coarse.
During the COVID pandemic, boaters have three options to get certified: through an instructor-led virtual classroom course, through online self-study or through a home study and equivalency exam recommended for experienced boaters.
After completing and passing an approved boating safety course or equivalency exam, students must apply for a Boater Education Card. For more information, visit http://www.boatered.org.
Reservations being taken for state park facilities
OLYMPIA – With the state moving to Phase 2 of the Roadmap to Recovery plan, Washington State Parks announced last week that many group camps, day-use shelters, interpretive centers and historic facilities will begin opening across the state later this month.
Nearly 55 group camps in 52 state parks will reopen Mar. 22, along with 88 day-use shelters in 57 state parks.
Occupancy at group camps and day-use shelters will be limited to 15 people total from two different households. Reservations for the 2021 season can be made until noon Thursday, Mar. 18.

Some Washington State Parks interpretive centers and historic facilities will reopen Mar. 19, some will reopen later, and some will remain closed until further notice.
