Pastors Corner

Is there still hope, peace, and joy in the middle of a global pandemic? So many have lost jobs, finances, and loved ones. Personal losses have mounted for so many, even in our neighborhoods. Political unrest, rebellion, pestilence, and poverty have gripped the entire world. Too many have grown despondent and have tragically taken their own lives.

To so many of you who have been challenged in your health, have lost family members, employment, and even faced the closure of your church and faith communities, the answer is “YES,” there is still hope, peace and joy in the middle of a global pandemic. The Judeo-Christian tradition has always found refuge in Jehovah God, the Creator of all life. In the Old Testament, the author of Psalm 91:1-2 wrote, “You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress; my God in whom I trust.’”

Our holiday slogans “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Holidays” may even sound cynical and nonsensical in the face of such apparent fear and despondency. Nevertheless, arising out of the tragedies of the year 2020 has been a new spirit of generosity, kindness, hope, and zeal. The Faith Community of churches still exist in your neighborhoods consisting of clergy, lay members, and even faith-seekers. They are challenged to practice the very faith they publicly profess. They have met this challenge in not living in permanent fear but have demonstrated through the sacrifices they make to each other and to non-believers. They have lived up to their profession of faith by showing good works in volunteering for the food pantry, opening warming shelters, and paying visits to the lonely.

Throughout Adams County, people still exist who care about others and have shown such care in personal ways. With 2021 on the horizon, please consider meeting up with a local church either online or in the many church buildings that have reopened in the aftermath of the viral pandemic. Let us make hope, peace, and joy go viral!
