Coaches, athletes happy to be back

Scholastic sports begin with camps

RITZVILLE - Lind-Ritzville middle and high school athletes began practicing Monday, Oct. 12, in after-school training camps.

"Athletes are thrilled to be participating in sports again," track team coach Caitlin Jeske said. "I am very happy for our athletes.

"The majority of them commented on how out of shape they were, but were happy to be back."

Tennis coach Janna Gingrich also said it was good to be back.

"It was great. The kids all seemed to have fun, and that was my goal," Gingrich said, adding her daughter was a senior last year and had to miss out on her senior season.

"So, I knew how much it would mean to these kids to do this. They were definitely excited and motivated to play."

Gingrich said all but one are returning players, "so, we jumped right into some drills, rallying and games."

"It was great to get out on the field and do some stuff," softball coach Todd O'Brien added. "Missing the season last spring was a big disappointment, and I feel bad for the seniors who didn't get to play their final year."

O'Brien said he had 23 athletes show up for practice Thursday, Oct. 15.

"We keep getting some new faces each day. Hopefully, we will end with close to 30, including middle school students," O'Brien said. "The girls really seemed to enjoy themselves. They all said they have had a long break and look forward to getting started again.

"They all said they were coming back next week, so that's a plus."
