Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
More than one person has told me that they wish 2020 would just go away, and some wish it would have never happened at all. I know it has been rough, especially for those people who have locked themselves away in fear that the dreaded C-19 will penetrate their closed windows and doors.
My biggest fear is that I will let the dreaded virus consume my life and scare me senseless. I have listened to a fair amount of doctors on TV, and their findings vary so much that it is hard to know which one is believable. However, when I find out which ones are actually treating patients as opposed to the ones mainly doing research only, I tend to want to listen to those Docs who have some skin in the game. But hey, that’s me.
Think of it this way, when you are listening to a football game on TV and the color commentator has a long list of failed seasons at several schools, it is hard to take them seriously. But there they are, because so many games are televised and the need for that color guy is important and let’s face it most people don’t realize Coach Schmo didn’t do a very good job as a head coach. Most people think that since he has been hired and is on TV he must have some great insight.
I really like those commentators that will be doing a broadcast of a team that most of us know inside and out, and they will start rambling on about a player or a coach or a previous game and you wonder where they got their information. I sometimes will look at the TV and say, “Hey, you only had to research one game this week and you even messed that up!” Or words of that nature or a few that can’t be repeated in this column.
So that brings us to what is going to happen this fall with college football. When I have talked with people – mask on and mask off – the consensus has been we’ve got to have football this fall. Well in some areas that may happen and many others will be sans football.
Most of this state is in Phase 2, so being able to practice or play without wearing a mask or oxygen tent would be out of the question. States that are in Phase 3 or higher would be able to have a season. Now Idaho schools would be able to have a season but since the Big Sky Conference has said ‘no’ to fall sports the Vandals and ISU Bengals are not going to play any games.
It looks like the NFL will be trying their best to have a season, which is smart since the need is great for fans. If players want to opt out of the season, no problem. Apparently the NBA has figured out a good way of testing and keeping players safe from the dreaded C-19 that it may be utilized by us regular folk. Well, at least that is what I heard on Sportscenter.
If your favorite sport does not return any time soon or you don’t like watching a cardboard cutout get hit in the chest with a foul or home run ball, it might be time to find a hobby that will keep yourself occupied. I have, and in a week or two I will let you know how well I have succeeded or failed.
I realize just how important sports are for us fans, but they are much more important for those athletes who are in high school. This is the time that they will remember for the rest of their lives. The chances for high school athletes to go on to the next level are slim at best, and the next level becomes more of a job than a fun experience. The next level is for us fans to appreciate.
So this fall if your team is not playing will you become a fan of the teams that are playing? For me the answer is…yes!
