Harrington Chamber offers free grocery delivery

Service to help community during coronavirus quarantines

HARRINGTON — Members of the Harrington Chamber of Commerce are offering free grocery delivery to residents in the Harrington area as a way to help the community during Covid-19 restrictions.

Chamber member and Post and Coffee Shop owner Heather Slack said the chamber was looking for a way to help the community during what can be a challenging time.

“We just wanted some way to help people stay connected and feel like they were cared for,” Slack explained. “We know since the Covid lockdowns that there are people who feel isolated or uncomfortable about coming to town. “

Community members who would like to take advantage of the free grocery delivery need to place their order with the Harrington Food Mart by Tuesday evening by calling 509-253-4534.Deliveries will be made on Wednesdays.

Food items that are available from the Harrington Food mart include: milk, eggs, butter, juice, lunch meat, tuna, bread, chips, applesauce, pasta, crackers, peanut butter, soup, frozen pizza, frozen lasagna, frozen pot pies, frozen hamburger and ice cream.

Slack said she hopes the service will provide a source of connection in the community, especially for elderly residents.

“Things have really changed for our seniors since Covid. We used to have meals three to four days a week in Memorial Hall and now food is only available by takeout. It’s less personal and it’s hard for people to not get together and talk,” she noted.

However, the grocery service is not just for the elderly. Slack emphasized the chamber is willing to help anyone who may need assistance during this time.

“If you are scared about the unknowns, we know it can be hard to get clear information on what is safe and what is not,” Slack said. “We’re just here to help.”
