Motorhome burns on I-90

Four escape injury

RITZVILLE – A 40-foot motor home caught fire near milepost 200 on I-90 westbound Friday afternoon.

Four people escaped the fire, uninjured.

"Everyone got out okay," WSP Trooper Hanson said. "We're still not sure what started the fire."

Adams County Fire Protection District No. 2 out of Lind responded to the call around 2:15 p.m. with eight firemen, three trucks and a water tanker. Assistant Fire Chief Rubben Labes said local farmers Kurt and Peter Franz, who volunteer with ACFPD No 2, brought an additional water tanker. The fire was put out shortly before 4:30 p.m. after it consumed the motor home and about 200 feet of grass on the shoulder of I-90.

Labes said he thought the fire might have started after a tire was blown, judging by marks on the highway.

Labes and fellow firefighter Frank Bren remained on scene to monitor the smoldering hulk of metal while waiting for a tow truck.

Labes said the people in the motor home were traveling with friends in another vehicle, who transported them from the scene.

"They wanted to climb back inside to look for their keys," Labes said. "I don't know if they will ever find them in there."
