Organizers hope to salvage season in wake of existing quarantine orders
ST. JOHN – Sprint boat racing has been postponed until the fall due to the coronavirus quarantine rules.
Webb's Slough announced its June 20 race date has been rescheduled to Sept. 26.
The sprint boat race course annually hosts two events and hopes to retain that tradition this year by moving the June 20 date which would have been the first race of the season, organizers said.
"We'll pull off whatever we can," owner and event organizer Amanda Webb said.
Due to the size of crowd the events draw, Webb has already canceled testing day, which would have been this month.
Webb noted eight boats usually come from Canada and the border is closed right now.
The Slough is retaining its Aug. 29 race date at this time.
Organizers need four weeks between races to fix the track and other maintenance.
Should the August date be canceled, they would not be able to reschedule it, she said.
"We are at the governor's mercy," Webb said.
The county would have to be in Phase IV to permit a gathering the size of what Webb's Slough attracts.
Tickets already purchased for the June event will be honored at the Sept. 26 date or refunds are available.
