Wrong-way driver led to fatal colission
MOSES LAKE — Two people were killed in a head-on crash in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90, about four miles east of the city about 2:37 p.m. Monday, May 18.
Robert J. Miller, 59, of Auburn, and Emanuel G. Schaible, 87, of Moses Lake, were both pronounced dead at the scene near Milepost 183.
The eastbound lanes of the interstate were closed while the Washington State Patrol investigated the scene; they reopened at 6:33 p.m.
According to the patrol, Schaible was westbound in the eastbound lanes; Miller was eastbound.
The two struck head-on in the inside lane, the patrol said. Schaible's 2005 Hyundai came to rest in the median; Miller's 2014 Chevrolet Express on the shoulder.
Miller was wearing a seatbelt; Schaible was not, the patrol reported.
Washington State Patrol Sgt. Raymond notified Miller’s family, the report shows. The Grant County Coroner notified Schaible’s next of kin.
The cause of the crash is listed as a wrong-way vehicle, the report shows. But the double fatal crash remains under investigation.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, the report said.
The crash prompted the eastbound lands of the interstate to be closed for several hours.
