Four Bronco wrestlers survive regionals

Ryan wins title, three others take bronze medals

REARDAN - Four Lind-Ritzville wrestlers are headed to the state Mat Classic tournament this Friday and Saturday in the Tacoma Dome.

At 113 pounds, Johnny Ryan won the regional title Saturday and will lead the Broncos into state. Bronze medalists Brandon Davis at 103, Tyson Ramsey at 120 and Douglas Morris at 195 round out the advancing contingent.

Freshman Davis will face Aksel Espeland of Darrington, also a freshman, in the opening round. The winner will advance to face Lozaro Soria of Tonasket.

Sophomore Ryan will open state with a bye and then wrestle the winner of the bout between Malachi Taylor of Ilwaco and Jonathan Jones of Kittitas.

Ramsey, an eighth-grader wrestling in the high school ranks, will open the tournament against sophomore Tristan Walker of Ilwaco. The winner will advance to the quarterfinals, where he will face sophomore Waylon Wilson of Tonasket.

A junior, Morris opens the Mat Classic against Chase Flynn, a South Bend senior. The winner will advance to face Myka Boyd of Lake Roosevelt in the quarterfinals.

In the regional tournament Saturday, Feb. 15, the Broncos finished seventh as a team with 79 points.

Liberty (Spangle) dominated the opening rounds and eventually topped Jenkins (Chewelah) for the regional title. Liberty had 210 points and Jenkins 149. Reardan was third with 123, Mary Walker (Springdale) fourth with 99 and Davenport sixth with 96.5.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline was sixth with 87, Wilbur-Creston eight with 76. Rounding out the Top 10 teams were Repubic/Curlew with 79 and Selkirk with 54.

Other teams with points include Kettle Falls, 48; Northwest Christian (Colbert), 38; Pomeroy, 33.5; and Colfax, 24.

In individual action at 113, Ryan - the Broncos sole gold medalist - opened with a bye before pinning Riley Jones of Kettle Falls in 48 seconds. He won the final, pinning Iree Goodman of ACH in 3:25.

Bronco Davis opened at 106 with a bye, but was pinned by Everett Wood of ACH in 3:18. In the consolation bracket, Davis then pinned River Crandall of Davenport in 2:17 and took a 10-6 decision over Bradlee Erickson of Mary Walker to with the bronze.

Broncos teammate Wesley Tracy wrestled some of the same competitors across the 106 bracket.

In his tournament-openter, he was pinned by Wood in 40 seconds, received a consolation round bye then was pinned by Erickson in 16 seconds.

In the match for fifth-place, Crandall then pinned Erickson in 52 seconds, sending the Bronco to sixth-place.

Ramsey earned his bronze after opening with a 4:00 pin of Nate Drake of Kettle Falls to advance to the 120-pound semifinal. There, he lost by pin in 51 seconds to Matthew Hess of Mary Walker.

In the wrestle-backs, Ramsey took a 11-7 decision over Caleb Lenocker of Davenport, then pinned Drew Jackson of Wilbur-Creston in 4:39 to win bronze.

At 195, Morris opened regionals by pinning Patrick Rueff of ACH in 3:04, but lost his semifinal bout to eventual champion Kobe Martinez of Reardan, who pinned him in 2:47.

Morris worked his way through the consolation round to medal by pinning Kellan Watson of Liberty in 4:14, then by pinning Rueff again in the medal match in 1:26.

Two grapplers represented the Broncos at 285 pounds - Thomas Rosen and Jeffrey Staley.

Staley forfeited his matches, first to Nicholas Schurger of Mary Walker then to teammate Rosen in the consolation rounds.

Rosen lost his opening match to Guy Fealy of Kettle Falls, who pinned him in 49 seconds.

After winning by forfeit, he was then pinned in 56 seconds by Will Hahn of ACH.

In the match for fifth-place, Ryder Fealy of Kettle Falls pinned him in 2:23, dropping Rosen to sixth.
