Group to paint ‘LIND’ for pilots to read
LIND — The Mid-Columbia Ninety-NInes, a group of women pilots in Washington and Oregon, want to paint the word “LIND” on the tarmac of the local airport. At its most recent meeting, the Town Council gave the group its conditional permission to do so.
The Mid-Columbia Ninety-Nines is a chapter of the Ninety-Nines: International Organization of Women Pilots, an organization commonly referred to as The 99s.
Aileen Coverdell of the local 99s spoke at the Feb. 11 Town Council meeting.
“One of the activities we do is airmarking airports,” Coverdell said. “We paint the name of the town on the runway or near the runway so that as planes fly overhead or come in to land, they know they are at the right spot.”
Coverdell told the council that The 99s don’t charge for labor.
“The only thing we would need from the town is paint,” Coverdell said. “It has to be highway paint.”
Coverdell said the job would require between five and seven gallons of paint.
The council unanimously approved the job to be completed, pending final information on where the word would be painted and exactly how much paint is needed.
Coverdell said she would be able to provide the council with that information soon.
