Kahlotus considers athletic options

KAHLOTUS — The recent Washington Interscholastic Activities Association sports classification list for schools for the next four years raised some questions about the local district.

On the list, Kahlotus High School is listed as an independent Class 1B school.

The list shows Lind-Ritzville/Sprague-Washtucna as a separate Class 2B cooperative.

But that doesn’t mean Kahlotus will be going its own way.

Kahlotus School District Superintendent Gregg Taylor said no decision has been made to split up the current cooperative athletic program, which includes Lind, Ritzville, Sprague, Washtucna and Kahlotus.

Taylor said such a decision would have to be made by the end of March.

Taylor said Kahlotus is just considering its options. The contract to participate in the combine expires yearly.

“We are just reviewing the contract to find out if [the combine] fits the needs of our kids or if we need to do something different,” Taylor said. “We just have to review that every year. It’s a big commitment.”

Taylor said leaving would require finding a better option.

Due to enrollment, the school competing on its own would likely not be an option, he said.

But joining with another school, such as Connell High School, could be an option.

Connell competes in Class 1A sports.
