Sprague Chamber event to announce Citizen of the Year

SPRAGUE – The Sprague Chamber of Commerce will announce the community’s Citizen of the Year during a celebration Monday, Jan. 20.

Doors open at 6 p.m. at Sprague School, S. 512 F St.

The event includes silent and live auctions, as well as a swearing-in ceremony for new officers.

Organizer and volunteer Joy Wilken said the chamber is still accepting donations for the event.

“From small items to large items,” she said. “We have gift certificates for homemade things to craft items and everything.”

The silent and live auction also has events that benefit Sprague Volunteer Fire Department, Sprague Food Bank, Friends of the Library, Lincoln County Lost and Found Pet Network, Just Sprague, and Norman’s World Rescue and Sanctuary.

Wilken is encouraging businesses and residents of nearby Ritzville, Cheney and Davenport to participate in the event.

Funds from the fundraising gala are used to enhance the community and put on events, she said.

“We put on Sprague Days, help host the Easter Egg hunt, the community-wide yard sale, Christmas bazaar and Santa’s visit,” she said, noting the organization is also looking for volunteers.

Officers to be sworn in this year include President Tim Wilken, Vice-President Dorothy Giddings, Treasurer Joy Wilken and board members Shari Stowell and Jill Sheffels.

“We do not have a secretary at this time,” she said.

The event will culminate with the unveiling of the 2019 Citizen of the Year.

The recipient, nominated by the public, is selected based on their work to help and improve the community.

There will be entertainment by community members, she said, noting chicken alfredo will be served during the celebration.

Tickets will be available at the door.
