Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The congressman representing Adams County says the airstrike that killed Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, will help protect America and its allies.
President Donald Trump ordered the early morning drone strike yesterday, Jan. 2, in the wake of attacks on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. The president said the attack also came as Soleimani was planning another attack on U.S. diplomats and military person.
“Soleimani was plotting eminent and sinister attacks on diplomats and military personnel. But we caught him, and terminated him...,” Trump said in a video released on his Twitter feed Friday, Jan. 3. “We took action last night to stop a war. We did not take action to start a war.”
Trump said the world is a safer place with Soleimani eliminated.
Newhouse, R-Sunnyside, agreed.
“Qasem Soleimani was an enemy of the United States, and his death signifies American strength against his threats, attacks, and acts of global terrorism,” Newhouse said in a press released to Eastern Washington media. “President Trump acted decisively to defend America.
“I will be carefully monitoring the situation as it plays out.”
Newhouse represents Ritzville and Adams County as part of the 4th Congressional District, which extends from Okanogan County south to Oregon, including Ritzville and Adams County.
Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Spokane, who represents Eastern Washington's 5th Congressional District, has not yet publicly commented on the targeted attack on Soleimani.
