Eastern Adams County's Only Independent Voice Since 1887
September is here once again and schools are back in session. It is the last month of the regular season for Major League baseball and the beginning of the football season for real.
Whether you like high school football, college football or the NFL your time has come to enjoy games live or on the tube. You are a fan and this is what you have been waiting for since the Super Bowl ended. I know many of you are anxious for the season to get started.
Last weekend the Broncos hosted five other teams at Jimmie Snider Field for this year’s high school jamboree. There was a time that I thought the jamboree wasn’t that big of a deal but I’ve changed my mind because this gives the football players a chance to hit somebody other than a teammate and the coaches get to see how much those young kids have improved since last season. It also gets them back in the groove of play calling and what plays may work best this season.
The chain gang has to get acclimated with the new season and I think the two groups worked quite well. After watching the referees and how they communicated with the players with little teaching moments the benefits of a less stressful jamboree should help them when they put on the stripe shirts for games that will count this week. I know that with fair and rodeo weekend going on having a jamboree makes it difficult for everyone to enjoy everything. I know that we are all spread thin on this particular weekend but if you say there is nothing to do here you’ve spent too much time doing nothing.
The Broncos will travel to Davenport for a nonleague game against the Gorillas on Friday night. This was once a huge Bi-County rivalry and a great matchup year in and year out. It is still a rivalry but a win or a loss will not have an effect on their league status.
Many of the college teams played their first games this past weekend. There were a couple of good matchups and upsets and a few money games that saw an FCS team travel to a really good FBS team for a big payday. Someone made a comment to me that UW took it my EWU Eagles and I said that Eastern made $550,000 so they didn’t lose much especially when the team left Seattle with a lot of bruises but no injuries.
WSU defeated New Mexico State 58-7 and their new starting QB Anthony Gordon threw five TD passes for a much needed great first start for the senior. Running back Max Borghi strolled through the Aggie defense for 128 yards becoming the first Cougar running back to run for over 100 yards in nearly three seasons. WSU had a great first game both offensively and defensively but New Mexico State is certainly not a football power. The Cougars most likely won’t be tested this week against a below average Big Sky opponent in Northern Colorado. So if you like to see big passing numbers you will enjoy next week’s game in Pullman.
Eastern will host the Lindenwood Lions from St. Charles, Missouri on Saturday in Cheney. The Lions are a NCAA Division II program and will begin their first season playing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. This will be Lindenwood’s only scheduled trip out of the Midwest this season. Lindenwood played in the MIAA conference the past seven seasons and went 4-7 in 2017 and 2018.
With games like these especially after taking it on the chin from the Huskies to the tune of 47-14 it is very important for the Eagles to start fast and pressure the Lions on the red turf. A team never wants to allow an opponent from a division with fewer scholarship players to hang around for very long. I’m looking forward to the short trek to Cheney and getting to see those Eagles really kick off the season in style. We’ll take that $550,000 and start anew with the 2019 season and hopefully end it in Frisco, Texas like we did in 2018. The Eagles’ goals are mighty high.
