Betty Lou (Steen) Elkington died in her sleep on August 6, 2019.
Betty was born July 3, 1926 in Freewater, OR to Loren and Lucritia Steen. After graduating from Walla Walla High School, she attended Kimball Business College, majoring in bookkeeping. On July 3, 1948 she married Kenneth M. Elkington in Walla Walla, WA.
Betty lived and worked in the Lind area for 46 years. She worked at Lamb-Weston in Connell for 18 years. After the death of her husband of 40 years (December 1988) she became very involved in her community. Betty was most proud of her involvement in the opening of the Lind Senior Center where she earned the Lind Chamber of Commerce "Citizen of the Year" award in 1998. She went on to serve as president of the center for seven years. While there she established the Senior Meal program and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Betty enjoyed crocheting and the Seattle Mariners.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Chet and sister Dorothy. She is survived by her children Bill (Linda) Elkington, Jim (Rosemary) Elkington, Cathy Elkington, Virginia (Cliff) Elkington, Sharon (Sigmund) Hanson, Merrilee (Howard) Lee, Mark (Brenda) Elkington, and Bonnie (Chuck) Zalesky. She has 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
