Worst Seat In The House: Stuff I've noticed

Every so often I think about things and wonder if I’m the only one that sees things a certain way. Oh, just to let you know that since this is All-Star baseball week and sports are at a minimum I may be writing a column about stuff other than sports. But hopefully it will be somewhat entertaining.

Ok, back to my previous thought. I’ve been reading the Blondie comic strip for a long time now. I also remember when it was a sitcom or a movie back in the 1950’s when I was a mere lad. Anyway, for those of you that follow the comic strip you know that Dagwood Bumstead enjoys eating. And his lovely Blondie is a very good cook and baker. Mr. Bumstead is famous for his Dagwood sandwiches that are stacked with meats, cheeses, condiments and other things that are stacked halfway to the ceiling (a little exaggeration here). To say the least Dagwood has a hearty appetite and most of the strips center around food and food at all hours of the day and night.

Another thing the Dagwood does well is sleep. Either on his favorite couch or at his desk at work it doesn’t matter it’s time to sleep. The one thing I don’t see him doing a lot of is getting much exercise. The only time you see him run is when he is late for his car pool ride. Now do you see anything strange about how Mr. Bumstead looks? The guy looks like he is in perfect shape.

Why is this guy not overweight? He is constantly eating lunch at the greasy spoon eatery where few if anyone else do. The special of the day is never heart healthy. Yet there is Dagwood with his baggy pants looking very fit.

I know this is a very old comic strip where the people never age but if we were to get real about this guy wouldn’t we think about the fact that he is a couch potato that overeats, doesn’t exercise, and yet looks extremely fit. If this comic strip was developed in this day and age Bumstead would be rocking the scales at something much higher than 140 like he looks in the strip. I think he’s lucky to still be married to Blondie if you want to know the truth.

Okay, next on this list of things for today is the horoscope. Do you read your horoscope every day and think about how it might influence what you will be doing? Have you ever thought that it might be a good idea to stay at home that day and wait until a more optimistic message is seen?

I know that since I retired I still read the horoscope but I definitely don’t wonder how it will influence my day or a meeting that I might have with someone in the afternoon. Being retired can be the most optimistic thing a person can have all day but it is a good thing to hold on to.

And finally here is a sports message for you. I have been watching the NBA Summer League this past week and I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve seen more NBA action in the last week than I saw all of last season.

Maybe it is because there are several former Gonzaga stars as well as former EWU guard Tyler Harvey getting in some action and it looks like these guys are playing for a purpose rather than trying to make human highlight reels. There is a lot of team play as well, which is always good for the game. Unfortunately it isn’t going to last much longer but it has been fun watching this next group of kids show their stuff.
