A memorial bench was dedicated on May 25 at Bassett Park in Washtucna, in memory of Sydney (Syd) Sullivan who was mayor for 44 years. Securing funding for upgrading Washtucna's water system and new sidewalks were two examples of Syd's many major accomplishments as mayor.
The memorial bench was a gift by surviving members of Syd's Washtucna High School Class of 1948. The dedication program was sponsored by the Office of the Mayor of Washtucna and the Washtucna Museum. The program moderator was Brett Blankenship, who spoke for the Museum and introduced speakers.
John Ray, a member of the Class of 1948, spoke of Syd's participation in many of the class activities including class plays and athletic events where he was a member of a six-man football team that defeated Connell at Washtucna their senior year. Sallye Sullivan, Syd's niece, introduced the many wonderful Sullivan relatives who attended.
Bryan Hille, Washtucna Mayor, relayed the constructive discussions he had with Syd through the years to help improve the community.
