So last week was very busy for pro sports if you’re into that. Yes, it was the finals of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). I didn’t watch most of the hockey games but I did watch some of the last two NBA games as in the last six minutes or so. Well, that’s when it really gets good right?
I’ll start with the NHL first. The odds on favorites were the Boston Bruins club that already had six Stanley Cups under their belts whereas the St. Louis Blues had none. It wasn’t the first time that the Blues were in the finals in their 52nd year of existence. But they hadn’t gotten over the hump to hoist the big silver cup for the ice hockey world to see.
I did hear from a few folks in the sporting world that said they didn’t want to see the Bruins help the Boston area get a trifecta in professional sports. After the Red Sox won the World Series and the Patriots take care of the Rams in the last Super Bowl many felt that the Bruins were a tough club to knock out.
The Blues were up to the task and allowed most of us to breathe a sigh of relief that New England wouldn’t get to gloat about hockey as well. We also didn’t have to hear about the Celtics since they didn’t make it far in the NBA playoffs this year.
I remember when the Blues became a NHL team in 1967. In those early years they had opportunities to win the Stanley Cup but they came up short each time. But in 2019 they were not to be denied and that is great for the city of St. Louis.
In the NBA championship the Golden State Warriors limped into the finals with All-Star Kevin Durant out with an injured calf. During the finals he was day to day and no one knew if the Durant would play at all. He practiced a couple of times and finally played in game 5 only to rupture his Achilles tendon. Now Durant’s future is in question since this type of injury takes a lot of time to heal and get right. He may not suit up next season.
There are a lot of Golden State fans in this area mostly because of former WSU great Klay Thompson. Thompson has one of the best form shots in the league and with his quick release he is tough to defend. He is also one of the best defenders in the league, which makes him doubly important to the Warriors.
Thompson had also been battling injuries and in game six he was fouled and would tear his ACL and would come out or the game late in the fourth quarter. So the Warriors are down two NBA All-Stars which makes it extremely tough to win. But this is the NBA and the Warriors have Steph Curry and Draymond Green. But the Toronto Raptors countered with Kawhi Leonard, who would be named the NBA Finals MVP.
