Lady Broncos sweep pair of weekend league games

The Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Lady Broncos thrashed their way through two league games last weekend, winning both games handily and improving to 3-2 in league play.

The dominance started on Jan. 11 against the Tekoa-Rosalia Timberwolves, who entered the game with no league wins and just one win on the season. The Lady Broncos jumped out to a big lead early, outscoring the Timberwolves 17-2 in the opening quarter and taking a 29-7 lead into halftime. It was more of the same in the second half, with LRS outscoring Tekoa-Rosalia 39-21 to win the game 68-28.

Three Lady Broncos scored at least 15 points in the game, with junior Eliza Galbreath leading all scorers with 22 points. Freshman Dakota Killian added 18 points and senior Brooke Koch scored 15 points in the romp.

"It's good to get a win, and to get some confidence back," said head coach Steve Wellsandt. "We've just been close [in most of our games], and it was good to just break a game open and get a lot of scoring in."

Galbreath also recorded 10 rebounds and three steals in the win, and was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line. Killian also had a busy and productive game defensively, grabbing nine rebounds and finishing with three steals. As a team, the Broncos turned the ball over just six times in the entire game, which Wellsandt was pleased with.

LRS traveled to Asotin the next day to take on the Panthers, whose only league win on the season had come against Tekoa-Rosalia. The game was close through the first half, with the Lady Broncos leading by five points, 25-20. But the LRS defense came out focused in the second half, limiting Asotin's offense to just seven points in the game's final 16 minutes, as the Lady Broncos downed the Panthers 56-27.

Sophomore Linnea Schafer led all scorers in the game with 15 points, while five other LRS players scored at least five points in the game. Galbreath was all over the place on the statsheet, finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals as the Lady Broncos improved to 3-2 in league play with five league games left to play.

"We were taking good shots, we weren't forcing it" said Wellsandt. "We were well-balanced, and so I was really happy with that. We started to pull away and a lot of the starters didn't really play much in the fourth quarter at all."

Being able to rest starters in the second half allowed Wellsandt to give some bench players valuable playing time.

"I think the more [the bench players] play out there, the better they can develop," said Wellsandt.

The Lady Broncos have three games on this week's schedule, including two more league games. LRS traveled to St. John on Jan. 15 to take on the St. John/Endicott Eagles in non-league action.

LRS then treks to Spangle on Jan. 18 to face off against the Liberty Lancers. The Lancers won the first matchup of the season on Dec. 11, beating the Lady Broncos 61-29. The game will start at 6 p.m.

The Lady Broncos play host to the Colfax Bulldogs the next day. LRS beat Colfax when the teams faced off on Dec. 14 winning 58-50 in Colfax. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
