CF Industries awards Ritzville School District $3,750 in mini-grants

The Ritzville Terminal of CF Industries awarded teachers in the Ritzville School District $3,750 in mini-grants on Jan. 14, as a part of the company's Classroom Mini-grant Program.

Through the program, teachers in the Ritzville School District are able to submit applications in order to receive the grants. The grants are aimed toward funding field trips, projects and other classroom activities that are centered around agriculture or the environment.

Dennis Schilling, superintendent of CF Industries' Ritzville Terminal, presented the teachers with their certificates acknowledging that their application had been approved. Schilling has been presenting these certificates for several years, and says that he feels it's important to support local schools and the teachers who emphasize agriculture and the environment.

Five applications were accepted by CF Industries, with some applications being joint projects among several teachers. Ritzville Grade School kindergarten teacher Dianne Leffel received a $680 grant to take her students on a field trip to learn about apples, their growth cycle and how they're impacted by the different seasons of the year.

Second grade teacher Kate Gantz received a $1,100 grant for each of the first and second grade classes at the Ritzville Grade School. With the grant, first and second graders will be able to attend the Mobius Science Center in Spokane to view the agricultural and environmental exhibits. Caitlin Schoessler and Caitlin Jeske's classes will also be able to attend the science center.

Third and fourth graders from the Lind Elementary School, as well as fifth and sixth graders, will also be able to attend the Mobius Science Center, thanks to the $570 grant awarded to Jennifer Anderson and the $350 grant awarded to Nick Weishaar, respectively.

And for the Lind-Ritzville High School, Donna Koch was awarded a $350 grant for the "Incredible Edible Egg" project, where students will learn the importance of the egg, how it develops, its anatomy, its nutrients and the different types of eggs and functions.
